Our customers are figuring out how to reopen safely and manage ever changing COVID-19 protocols and requirements from local, state and federal government. To do all this, they not only need to communicate rapid changes to their staff, they also need to ensure everyone has the tools they need to do their day to day work along with their new responsibilities. Our platform and team enables the processes that help districts keep ahead of these evolving needs and support their people.

We transform paperwork from a daily stumbling block to a strategic tool. In short, we are powering the future of school district operations by helping district administrators drive the systemic change needed to improve productivity, accountability, and equity.

Position Summary:

As both a strong people manager and process driven leader, the Head of Engineering will nurture a culture of engineering excellence and collaboration, provide strategic technical direction and prioritize infrastructure and technical debt; and, as the team grows, scale staffing structure to best execute engineering and product goals. Day-to-day management of the engineering team is first priority in this role, but we also seek your strategic guidance and thought-partnership into mission-critical decisions intersecting with engineering, product and customer success and sales.

Informed K12’s engineering team understands working code is not enough, and strives for excellence in both the value we provide to our districts and the maintainability of our maturing codebase. The Head of Engineering will appreciate that we have 100% test coverage and champion best practices around code quality, testing, pairing, developing early career talent, and finding new ways to challenge senior team members to grow.

The ideal candidate will have managed a team similar in scope, and will have experience leading and/or observing an environment that has scaled. The Head of Engineering will be energized by the opportunity to mentor and develop a high performing diverse team, bring refined opinions about code quality and testing, and promote nuanced thinking for growing engineering talent and teams.


  • Provide leadership and management to the engineering team and foster an inclusive and highly collaborative team culture
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership in day-to-day software development. Maintaining excellence in execution and quality while continually reducing the complexity of projects, services, and processes in order to get more done with less work
  • Develop long term strategic plan and prioritization for engineering work; drive plans to identify and address high level areas of technical debt and link plans to larger business priorities
  • Anticipate team needs and gaps, and identify ways to actively recruit and make the engineering team diverse, inclusive, and high performing
  • Nurture the technical and leadership growth of the engineers through code reviews, pairing, documentation, technical guidance
  • Lead engineering group in thinking through technical challenges related to flexibility vs. structure, data security and privacy, reliability, seasonality of usage, etc.
  • Drive connection between product and engineering/technical needs to go above and beyond in service of districts; identify and address high level areas of strategic technical debt and links plans to larger business priorities
  • Influence product and weigh in on all aspects of business, market positioning, user research

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Strategic engineering leader with 6+ years in complex SaaS environments
  • Experience in growing an engineering team from 7 to 20+ people or have been part of a team that has scaled effectively
  • Intellectually curious, enjoys thinking about and developing frameworks to best manage and grow engineering teams. Bonus if you have read and enjoyed: Peopleware, Accelerate, Martin Fowler’s article on Developer Effectiveness, Team Topologies, Philosophy of Software Design
  • Full stack preferred but not required; must bring ability to think critically about architecture and serve as credible thought partner to senior engineers
  • Clear communication with ability to articulate things in clear and concise way
  • Bias towards action, comfort with ambiguity, and propensity to view less process and structure as opportunity for creativity but able to create structure to address needs to properly help the team scale
  • Deep experience in SaaS companies with a more complex product offering
  • Deep appreciation for Informed K12’s mission, commitment to DEI, and focus on code quality
  • Specific tech stack/programming languages not required; our tech stack includes Rails 5.2, Postgresql, Typescript (React/jQuery/Vanilla JS), Sass CSS, Sidekiq, Circle CI, Heroku, Github
